Drug and food interactions with NEXIUM:
Patients buy NEXIUM online, as per their physician’s direction. However, they should disclose their other medications to him which are been taken, at the same time. This avoids any significant drug interactions if any.
Concomitant use of NEXIUM and antiretroviral drugs like nelfinavir, atazanavir or saquinavir should be avoided, as it may affect the absorption of antiviral drugs.
This drug is not intended to get immediate pain relief from heartburn problems.
NEXIUM i.e. esomeprazole inhibits gastric acid production. Therefore drugs like atazanavir or ketokonazole for which pH plays an important role in absorption, are less absorbed.
Concurrent use of NEXIUM with methotrexate leads to elevated and prolonged levels of methotrexate and its metabolite in the blood which may lead to methotrexate toxicities.
NEXIUM may interfere with CYP2C19 which is a major esomeprazole metabolizing enzyme. Therefore, concurrent administration of esomeprazole and CYP2C19 substrate like diazepam must be avoided.
Drugs like rifampin which are known to induce both CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 if concurrently administered with NEXIUM may reduce the esomeprazole serum level.
Concurrent use of NEXIUM and clopidogrel should be avoided.
Other drugs or herbal preparation including iron supplements, St.John’s wort (it is a plant of which the botanical name is Hypericum perforatum), cilostazol, tacrolimus and erlotinib must be disclosed to the physician while treating with NEXIUM.
Precautions and warnings:
NEXIUM i.e. esomeprazole is likely to get excreted in human breast milk. Therefore, a nursing mother should use this drug under strict medical supervision and prescription. If any adverse symptoms are observed then she should contact her physician immediately.
The safety and efficacy of NEXIUM have been proven in children of one to seventeen years old for short-term treatment of GERD. The same is established in infants of one to twelve months old for short-term treatment of erosive esophagitis due to acid-mediated GERD. However, the use of the drug and its safety is not reported for infants less than one-month-old.
